Summer of 2017 This summer, Mauricio Salgado, Arielle Julia Brown, Ashley Teague and Carlos Sirah co-organized a series of events alongside several community partners: The Delta Cultural Center, The Boys and Girls Club, and Waves of Prayer Ministries. The goal was to begin building relationships with community members by working alongside them to provide services that met their programmatic needs. During the summer, they also met with other community members and organizations to discuss the needs of the community and the commemorative efforts for the upcoming centennial of the mass lynching.

This project was a partnership with The Boys and Girls Club of Phillips County and the Delta Cultural Center, to support DCC in developing a youth theatre program. Similar to our workshop in Elaine, this workshop focused on local heroes. We worked with 20-30 youth between 4-12 years of age from 1:30-3:30pm. The students played theater games, built songs, and told stories. Our team included the Rev. Dr. Kyle Miller. The week culminated in a small sharing for both groups and their parents at the Boys and Girls Club in West Helena and included the opportunity for families to sign their children up for a future theatre program.
Visual Art Workshop at BGACDC – July 20th and 29th This workshop ran from 10-12pm and was attended by 16 students between 4-12 years of age. The purpose of the workshop was to start creating designs that will eventually be a part of a new mural at BGACDC. The theme of the design is family and students were encouraged to consider words and images that expressed their experiences with their families. The workshop was then followed by a full day of painting with 10 youth and 6 adults.
